Shimanami Kaido Cycling Route4.3
Enthusiastic cyclists must try this 70km-long route over the Seto Inland Sea, passing through six small islands with beautiful scenery. The cycling route was opened in 1999, connecting Onomichi in Japan's main island and Imabari in Shikoku with six bridges and one boat ride. There are 14 bike rental points along the route, and you can drop the bike off at any of the points.
The fees for bike rental and route usage is reasonable, and there are numerous camping grounds and 'minshuku' inns on the islands. Among touristy attractions are the Hirayama Museum dedicated to a native well-known painter and Kosanji Temple gathering all the best of Japan's Buddhist architecture, both located on Ikuchi Island.
