Tomonoura is a town along the Inland Sea with a bay forming a good natural harbor. As the bay is located near the points where the tide switches, this port town flourished for many centuries as boats sailing between western Japan and the capital frequently docked here to wait for a favorable tide. There are many touristy spots dotting the town including historic temples.

A port town depicted in "Ponyo on the Cliff", animation film by Studio Ghibli, was modeled after this port, and there is a cafe that displays some original sketches drawn by director Hayao Miyazaki. The lighthouse erected during the town's heyday in the Edo period is an iconic symbol here.
