Just 10-15 minutes by boat from Ishigaki Island, this tiny islet with traditional houses, tropical flowers and pristine beaches makes a good day trip. The islet is about 9km in circumference, almost flat with no more than 20m at the highest point, and inhabited by some 300 people. Thanks to preservation efforts, the traditional Okinawa scenery is still there - houses roofed with red tiles, coral stone walls, lion-like statues and alleys covered with white pebbles.
The beaches are considered among top 10 in Japan for its beauty, and tropical flowers like hibiscus and and bougainvillea bloom year-round. The seed-picking festival, dating from the 15 century, is held for 10 days in September or October. Rent a bike to enjoy a loop tour in the island.
