This temple is situated on a hill with a huge terrace that has a commanding view of Kyoto. The spot has been attracting pilgrims since the 8th century, and a Japanese idiom deriving from this temple - "take the plunge at Kiyomizu Temple" (meaning: jumping off from the cliff / take a leap of faith) - is still well used today.

Below the main terrace is the Otowa waterfall where people make a line for a drinking ceremony, as Kiyomizu means 'pure water'. In the precincts, there is a small Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. The Niomon entrance gate and the three-story pagoda, both important cultural properties, stand magnificently.

The uphill road to the temple is also fun with plenty of touristy stores to poke around in. It is recommended to come here in cherry blossom or autumn foliage season.

We actually didn't plan to come. We were supposed to go to Golden Temple. But it closed 5pm. So, while on the train there, we decided to go here. It was a cold uphill walk. Lot's of shops around you. When you got to the top, there were many people. It's a local tourist spot too. People come here to make wishes. And it's very effective. Our sister in law wished that we had a baby. And we did! We came back to give thanks. The great wooden temple was under construction. Even the scaffolding was made of wood. It was massive. I know there's lots to learn, but it was cold. In fact it's only open 3 times a year. So we are lucky! We followed everyone and took photos. Awesome view! Beautiful lights on the Autumn leaves. Also, don't miss the Dark Temple, where you take off your shoes and go into the "womb" and touch a rotating stone. Make sure to make a wish, YA? Overall, it's a very nice place. The architecture is amazing. It's towers up to the sky and it looks majestic, beautiful & enchanting! I wish you luck to be able to come and enjoy the tour!

One of Kyoto's top attractions, completely covered in scaffolding and cloth which isn't apparent until you've paid the entry fee. This must be how visitors to Big Ben feel these days... Apart from that the enjoyment of the temple is diminished by the colossal crowds and sea of selfie sticks, time would be better spent going to a few of Kyoto's quieter spots.

Go early during the autumn if you want to avoid crowds. Got there around 7am on a Sunday morning and there weren't too many people. The view from the temple balcony is austere and if you walk there go trough the cemetery as the route is quite memorable itself.

one of the most ancient temple in Japan as Kyoto being one of the oldest cities in Japan. I have been here many times and each time I still find this place charming. You first walk through charming shops and restaurants selling Japanese items and then into the temple region. The surrounding area and park are nice to walk through, and the outlook of Kyoto city is a pleasant experience. Best weather would be spring or autumn, as the walk could get very hot in summer. Could easily spend a whole morning or afternoon here exploring the place. A must visit place for anyone who’s the first timer in Kyoto.

Nice and beautiful legacy of Japanese culture, they keep the place well organization and clean.
It’s a bit shame that the tempo is under reconstruction so couldn’t see the overview of appearance.
Love the old streets there, a lot of people wear traditional clothes.

However, once you step into the precincts of the temple, such festival mood soon disappears and you realize that you are in the divine zone of Buddha.
