Fushimi Inari Shrine4.9
This shrine in the south of Kyoto is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates straddling the mountain paths, forming mysterious tunnels 4km long in total. This is the headquarters shine for some 30,000 Inari shrines all over the country, dedicated to the god of bountiful harvest and business prosperity. In the main precinct, you will see dozens of fox statues as the fox is considered the messenger of the Inari god.
The torii gates are all donated by worshippers since the 16 century and you will find the donator's name at the back of each gate. The torii tunnel leads you to the top of Mount Inari (233m) and takes about 2-3 hours to make a round tour. Along the path are a few eateries that offer 'inari sushi' and 'kitsune udon', both using deep-fried sliced tofu (aburaage), allegedly a favorite of foxes.

Bad food. Food photos are deceiving. From tempura to curry rice, expect cafeteria quality food. Not worth the price.

Fushimi-Inari lives up to its fabulous reputation and it is a great experience! All the pictures and everything you have read do not do this place justice - it is a place you really need to experience to believe! We were overcome by the beauty of the gardens and the hundreds of Torii gates that lined the paths up the mountain and then back down- it was a delightful pilgrimage to walk the path.
It was not too crowded when we arrived at around 3pm, so we started up the path, and made our progress and gentle climb, stopping and taking pictures with other people along the way - terrific views and great landmarks all over!
This is a Japanese landmark that should be on everyone’s list!
