This shrine was erected in 1895 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto. The massive 24m-high torii gate leads to the vermilion main building ringed by white sand. The innermost area is a spacious 10-hectare garden, which is designated a national scenic spot.

This is a famous cherry blossom spot with the best season being from early to mid April. The night illumination reflected on the pond creates a magical setting for flower viewing. Jidai Matsuri ('Festival of the Ages') held on October 22nd is one of top three Kyoto festivals and features a long procession people wearing costumes that represent different eras of Kyoto's 1200 years of history. The procession is as long as 2km and last about 3 hours.

One of the newer shrines in Kyoto. It's nice and large with very spacious grounds. Because of that it's not as overcrowded as many other places. Behind the shrine there's a beautiful large garden with ponds. However, the entrance fee to the gardens is 600 ¥ while the entrance to the shrine is free. But I highly recommend visiting the gardens too.

I definitely recommend this place. Its worth to visit. Beautiful architecture and backdrop of mountains. Best to visit in the afternoon before it closes.

What a wonderful surprise! The grounds were absolutely beautiful and well worth wandering around. We also opted to walk through the garden space which was 600 yen per person. I would highly recommend it as the scenery was lovely and well worth the money. Very peaceful space! Be sure to allow yourself at least one hour to really see the area if you're also planning on walking through the gardens.

Another garden inside the Garden. The garden located behind the main building was amazing and very spacious with a large pond and Chinese inspired bridge

Taihei-kaku, known as the Bridge of Peace, covered wooden bridge with a cypress bark-shingled structure topped with a phoenix

Anyhow, Heian-jingu Shrine is one of the most important and visually impressive Shinto shrines in Kyoto! A must visit for history and cultural junky!
