The precinct area of Zenkoji Temple is spread over 59,000 square meters, and consists of Daikanjin Temple, Daihongan Temple, and 39 minor temples. Approximately 6 million people visit this temple every year. Since being founded, the temple has been popular among powerful lords and leaders, such as Minamotono Yoritomo, Takeda Shingen, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. During the Edo period, the temple became more popular among the common people. The highlight is "Kaidan-Meguri" ―go under the temple alter and walk through a dark corridor to try to find a lock that is connected to the temple's principle object of worship. If you succeed, you may receive the promise of rebirth in paradise.
