The country's northernmost zoo attracts a huge number of visitors, from Japan and overseas, with its unique interactive viewing facilities. Located in Asahikawa City in the middle of Hokkaido, the zoo has created a variety of facilities inducing natural behaviors of each animal, instead of just "showcasing" them.
Visitors in the glass dome in the middle of enclosure can see polar bears rushing toward them. The orangutan trapezes and the walk-through penguin aquarium enable you to watch their active behaviors. The zoo is very clean and barely smells, making "the viewers smile all the time".

A lovely zoo to be in, especially if you grew up in the tropics. Here you can really see the winter animals in a climate close to their natural habitat, and quite up close too! We can tell that the zookeepers have much love for the zoo and it’s animals; most signs and info boards are hand drawn and handwritten, which render the zoo a personal touch. Not too English friendly though, but the animals and the feeding shows are enough to evoke a sense of wonder that you may have lost as an adult. The crowds disappeared after lunch so I had a nice quiet stroll around the grounds looking at the animals and scenery in the cool late-November air. The zoo is clean and the food affordable (:

We went here several times.
Winter season has penguin march right in front of our kids.
The giraffe is very close. The hippopotamus swim happily in the see through glass aquarium.
The polar bear actively moving and swimming.

It was raining when we were there. The zoo is a nice place to visit. We can see the sincerity of the zoo as most of their instructions and sign were hand written or drawn! But they lack of English information for us to read so I minus one Star.

Very Nice Zoo. The paid car parks in front put on sign indicate the free parking lots are full and trying make us enter their car park, but it was not true. The guards at Zoo just directed us to the free parking lots. They are very helpful.
