The country's northernmost zoo attracts a huge number of visitors, from Japan and overseas, with its unique interactive viewing facilities. Located in Asahikawa City in the middle of Hokkaido, the zoo has created a variety of facilities inducing natural behaviors of each animal, instead of just "showcasing" them.
Visitors in the glass dome in the middle of enclosure can see polar bears rushing toward them. The orangutan trapezes and the walk-through penguin aquarium enable you to watch their active behaviors. The zoo is very clean and barely smells, making "the viewers smile all the time".

We went here several times.
Winter season has penguin march right in front of our kids.
The giraffe is very close. The hippopotamus swim happily in the see through glass aquarium.
The polar bear actively moving and swimming.

It was raining when we were there. The zoo is a nice place to visit. We can see the sincerity of the zoo as most of their instructions and sign were hand written or drawn! But they lack of English information for us to read so I minus one Star.

Very Nice Zoo. The paid car parks in front put on sign indicate the free parking lots are full and trying make us enter their car park, but it was not true. The guards at Zoo just directed us to the free parking lots. They are very helpful.

A must visit place, especially in winter. A nice ambient zoo, with so many different view angle for visitor. A well design cage so visitor can see more of the animal without disturbing the animal itself.
Even the elderly still visited this place in winter, although sometimes the pavement are slippery because of the ice. Just be careful when you walk.
The ticket price is not expensive and easy to reach by bus from Asahikawa station.

Nice zoo, with very beautiful animals and interesting installations: For all 'important' species there is little houses with explanations (In full Japanese) and observations spots from funny or nice places.
I was a little bit disappointed by the enclosures which are not always very pretty, but the animals seem to be good and there are many of playing structures or installations to challenge them.
Be careful with the closing time: it is written 17:15 but they will start to close the attractions and to put the animals inside around 16:30...
