The country's northernmost zoo attracts a huge number of visitors, from Japan and overseas, with its unique interactive viewing facilities. Located in Asahikawa City in the middle of Hokkaido, the zoo has created a variety of facilities inducing natural behaviors of each animal, instead of just "showcasing" them.
Visitors in the glass dome in the middle of enclosure can see polar bears rushing toward them. The orangutan trapezes and the walk-through penguin aquarium enable you to watch their active behaviors. The zoo is very clean and barely smells, making "the viewers smile all the time".

I've been now in May and January, and both the spring and winter here are absolutely gorgeous. The animals were much happier in the cold weather of January, so we were able to see them more active. The penguin march was incredibly cute! We ate lunch at the Garden Lion (?) Terrace restaurant, and it was reasonably priced and tasted good. Much cheaper than buying zoo good in the States. Definitely recommend a visit.

Nice big zoo, lots of animals to see including some only found in Hokkaido.
The famous penguin parade was nice, there were plenty of penguins and they all looked really cute. Be sure to reach 30-15 minutes before the parade though, otherwise it will be hard to find a spot along the route.
There are places to eat in the zoo, so don't worry about having to travel back to Asahiyama Station for lunch.
** Some tips when going there **
Getting there was not hard at all, there are signs at Asahiyama Station that lead to the bus that goes to the zoo. I don't quite remember the price of the bus ride, but it probably costs somewhere around ¥100-150.
The Zoo only opens from 10:30am to 3:30pm, so try to get there at 10:30am. There is usually a queue for the bus, so if let's say you want to get there at 10:30, plan to reach Asahiyama Station by 9:30am.

Can definitely recommend this place. Winter zoo experience is a first for me.
Penguin walk was quite nice. Polar bear feeding was also amazing.
Easy to take photos of most of the animals. All of them were very active during our visit.

The entrance ticket is only ¥820 which is relatively cheap compared to others (other countries). The animals are well treated, the penguins parade (at 2:30pm) is the main show for the zoo, they are just too cute :)
You can easily spend a whole day there, however during winter the park close at 3:30pm which is quite early.

The penguin parade was the high light for most of the visitors. With only 810 yen per person you can see so cute penguin team walked along the long walk way with very closed good enough for you to take a photos until enough. Later inside the zoo still have owl, bears... that worth if you come to this area. The program will have twice a day, please check before coming.
Inside do have a restaurant with a simple lunch and enough rest rooms.
