The country's northernmost zoo attracts a huge number of visitors, from Japan and overseas, with its unique interactive viewing facilities. Located in Asahikawa City in the middle of Hokkaido, the zoo has created a variety of facilities inducing natural behaviors of each animal, instead of just "showcasing" them.
Visitors in the glass dome in the middle of enclosure can see polar bears rushing toward them. The orangutan trapezes and the walk-through penguin aquarium enable you to watch their active behaviors. The zoo is very clean and barely smells, making "the viewers smile all the time".

Nice zoo, with very beautiful animals and interesting installations: For all 'important' species there is little houses with explanations (In full Japanese) and observations spots from funny or nice places.
I was a little bit disappointed by the enclosures which are not always very pretty, but the animals seem to be good and there are many of playing structures or installations to challenge them.
Be careful with the closing time: it is written 17:15 but they will start to close the attractions and to put the animals inside around 16:30...

Good sized zoo on the outskirts of town. Ample parking for drivers. Tourists are probably better served using the bus which departs every 30 minutes or so from the JR Asahikawa station.
Zoo involves much walking, occasionally up steep hills or stairs, but there are many resting places, food stalls and restrooms available throughout the property.
There are several Children's play areas and activities. Feeding times for many of the animals are posted, with seating/viewing areas for the penguins, sea lions and a few other animals. If you love wildlife, or have children who do, this is well worth a visit.

A pleasant place to bring kids. Expect about half a day to visit.
We particularly liked some places where they try to immerse the public in the habitat of the animals (monkeys and other primates, wolves, polar bears, etc.).
Despite being built some time ago, it is very well maintained.

Not recommended during summers. There is hardly any shade here for people, and the sun is merciless during summers. If you do go in summer time, make sure you are carrying an umbrella, and wear sun screen! Best way to reach is by bus, 40 minutes, from Asahikawa JR station. Decent options for eating and drinking inside, reasonable price too, so no need to pack your own picnic. Liked Sapporo zoo better. Though it may have been due to the weather difference.

Full of cute animals. A good time for everybody especially kids. Not a lot of walking needed since it's a rather small zoo in comparison to others. Which was good since we had two adults that had acquired injuries and had difficulty walking that day. Had fun with the chimps and polar bear.
