The country's northernmost zoo attracts a huge number of visitors, from Japan and overseas, with its unique interactive viewing facilities. Located in Asahikawa City in the middle of Hokkaido, the zoo has created a variety of facilities inducing natural behaviors of each animal, instead of just "showcasing" them.
Visitors in the glass dome in the middle of enclosure can see polar bears rushing toward them. The orangutan trapezes and the walk-through penguin aquarium enable you to watch their active behaviors. The zoo is very clean and barely smells, making "the viewers smile all the time".

I went there early May with my family and we enjoyed it very much. It was less crowded than we thought though it was holiday season. It was like an aquarium and zoo combined in one place. You can see animals at very close distance and my kinds loved it.

The zoo is small compared to the one where I come from. But that's the beauty of it. It has enough exhibits to keep both kids and adults entertained and it wont take up too big a chunk of your day. Recommended to spend 2 hours here max, and then move on to the next place. Definitely a must-see if you're in Asahikawa.

2019.3.11 me and my wife visited.
this is such a lovely zoo.
penguin walk is a major event and happens 11am and 230pm on 2019 march. recommend to check the time before visiting.
not only the penguin walk, but also its coziness yields adorable vibe of the zoo.
it's a small zoo in a countryside, but to me, experience is better than what you get at bigger zoos in the cities.

I highly recommend this zoo. If you can, go on a day that is slightly colder (the animals become more active).
The zoo is layed out in a way that makes walking it very leisurely. I was able to see all the exhibits within three hours comfortably.
The animals are displayed in a way that allows you to get extremely close to them. Food is layed along the cage walls to encourage the animals to come closer. You are very often only one or two feet away from them.
If you go right when they open they begin the day by feeding the giraffes. Heading straight there will get you inches away from their faces.
The souvenirs were very inexpensive as well. The food was REALLY good. I recommend the special park ice cream cones.

While the Penguin Walk is the biggest highlight of this zoo, there are also many other attractions here too.
Highly recommend the snowy owls. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you would love them a lot.
The time when I was there, they didn't really move much. One was camouflaged in the snow on the ground while the other was resting gracefully on a branch. It was such a peaceful scene and it was fun just to see them turning only their heads with their bodies stationary, scrutinizing the visitors around them.
