Sanzen-in Temple, founded in the late 8th century, is among the oldest belonging to the Tendai sect of Buddhism. Located in the town of Ohara, an hour north of central Kyoto, the temple is surrounded by natural beauty and offers a relaxing stroll through a variety of seasonal flowers. The traditional gardens with vermilion gates and green moss are the must-see. You will be enchanted with 3,000 hydrangeas sprawling over the forest.
For two weeks around May, the town of Ohara hosts the Oharame Festival, in which local women walk around the neighborhood in a procession dressed in traditional farming costume. You can rent this costume free and participate in the festival. Another attraction is Otonashi-no-taki ('soundless waterfall), which flows calmly in the mountain behind the temple.

This is the best temple we visited in Kyoto and surroundings. Great, just great gardens, so different and so beautiful. We spent there at least 3 hours walking around and enjoying ourselves, with rather few people around.

Beautiful temple grounds especially during cherry blossom season. Because it's out of the way in Ohara, also not crowded with tourists. Good restaurants nearby and the walk here from the bus station is gorgeous too, definitely worth the entrance fee and time!

Absolutely stunning. I could stay all day here. I will come back again in the fall season.

An old temple in Ohara village with vast garden. This temple is famous for its cherry blossoms in spring and atumn leaves colors in fall. Form the outside it looks like a fortress with high wall and a wooden gate. Outside the temple there are many shops and cafes to satisfy your hunger. Good for a day trip from Kyoto but come early as it can get crowded.

Comparatively smaller than Ginkakuji, the reason to visit is perhaps to marvel at the surrounding area leading up to the temple. Lots of souvenir and food shops have sprung up to make the remote area more tourist friendly. Not worth the hour long or more bus ride from Kyoto station.
