Toji Temple was erected in the late 8th century as a guardian temple of the state when the emperor's palace was moved from Nara to Kyoto. This temple is best known for its 55m five-story pagoda, the highest of its kind in Japan and an iconic landmark in central Kyoto.

A popular flea market (Kobo-san) is held on the 21 of every month, attracting a multitude of locals and tourists. It is a 15-minute walk southwest of Kyoto Station.

A phenomenally beautiful temple complex. The Five tiered pagoda is a wonder however the true beauty is the deities in the temple. The temples are low light but very quiet, peaceful and relaxing. The complex is very large so you’ll need a few hours to fully appreciate your experience. This was our first place to visit in Kyoto and it set a great standard of historical sites.

It's very convenient to walk from Toji temple to Kyoto Station and AEON Mall, Kyoto. It is just 10 minute of walking distance. For travellers in big group, can stay few nights next to Toji temple. It's traditional Japanese house with modern interior. Highly recommend it! 🙂

One of my favorite historic site in Kyoto. The 5 storey pagoda is very impressive for the engineering design, which was very advanced for it's time. Set in a lovely garden. Best on spring time.

One of my favorite temples in Kyoto. The pagoda is stunning in my opinion. Furthermore the nighttime illumination event during the fall colors is incredible. Highly recommend this temple complex to anyone visiting Kyoto.

This Temple and the grounds it sits on were absolutely beautiful. You can't go into the main temple but you can look inside through doors if you go at the right time of the year, check the calendar on their website. The other buildings were amazing too, many beautiful statues and decorations, as well as gorgeous scenery outside. I'd highly recommend going.

Toji Temple is situated 30 minutes away by train from my house. It has very beautiful five-storied Pagoda. This temple was donated to Kukai by Emperor Saga. I see this temple every time I go to Kyoto.

Cathy again. As I made a big mistake, I visited Toji on May 15th, 2014. However, I was locked out as I reached the temple after 5 in the afternoon, so I took pictures from the overpass near the temple. Five story pagoda is beautiful with young leaves in May. I will go there earlier next time. You too be careful! Reach there before 5 in the afternoon!!

Nara used to be the capital of Japan and has lots of old temples and shrines . Among them, Todaiji temple is the most impressive because it has a huge image of Buddha. You can't miss it when you are in Kansai area. You can enjoy feeding deer wandering here and there; over 1000 deer are counted now.
They are really tamed and friendly.
