Toji Temple was erected in the late 8th century as a guardian temple of the state when the emperor's palace was moved from Nara to Kyoto. This temple is best known for its 55m five-story pagoda, the highest of its kind in Japan and an iconic landmark in central Kyoto.

A popular flea market (Kobo-san) is held on the 21 of every month, attracting a multitude of locals and tourists. It is a 15-minute walk southwest of Kyoto Station.

This is not worth 500 yen. The pagoda is often closed, so I basically paid 500 yen to walk around for 25 minutes. None of the statues in the buildings are very unique. I recommend you take a picture from the outside, you'll get the same experience.

I also went during the cherry blossoms, but there are much nicer places in Kyoto to view cherry blossoms.

The highlight of my latest trip to Kyoto. Try visiting this temple in the Sakura season for some great views in the morning and a breathtaking illumination in the evening. Quite a big temple and you need at least 2 hours from start to finish. The illumination starts at 1830 and there is a special night view ticket for 1000 Yen. Expensive? Yes, but totally worth the price of admission.

We took our time in reaching the huge pagoda at the other end and captured the imposing structure from various points. There is no set route but I recommend visiting the 2 big halls at the end with imposing statues of Buddhism/Hinduism. There is a small place to drink Japanese tea and enjoy Japanese style sweets.

A must see when in Kyoto.

Was here on the last day of my visit to Kyoto. The atmosphere was very peaceful... probably because a small part of it is under construction and there were not a lot of visitors at all. You could access most of the temple (including the gift shop where they sell the amulets)without paying admission - which is for the small area outside of the pagoda. Getting there is convenient by train or subway with Kyoto station and Toji Station both not far away.

A very grand and beautiful Buddhist temple located a few bus stops away from the subway station. The outer barricade of the shrine is allows free entrance, where you'd get to see the other traditional infrastructures, nature, souvenir shops and temples.

Additional ticket payment has to be made to enter the inner barricade to see the other shrines and main attraction, which is the 5 storey pagoda. A very suitable choice for Buddhist devotes and also tourists.

A phenomenally beautiful temple complex. The Five tiered pagoda is a wonder however the true beauty is the deities in the temple. The temples are low light but very quiet, peaceful and relaxing. The complex is very large so you’ll need a few hours to fully appreciate your experience. This was our first place to visit in Kyoto and it set a great standard of historical sites.

Toji Temple is situated 30 minutes away by train from my house. It has very beautiful five-storied Pagoda. This temple was donated to Kukai by Emperor Saga. I see this temple every time I go to Kyoto.

Cathy again. As I made a big mistake, I visited Toji on May 15th, 2014. However, I was locked out as I reached the temple after 5 in the afternoon, so I took pictures from the overpass near the temple. Five story pagoda is beautiful with young leaves in May. I will go there earlier next time. You too be careful! Reach there before 5 in the afternoon!!

Nara used to be the capital of Japan and has lots of old temples and shrines . Among them, Todaiji temple is the most impressive because it has a huge image of Buddha. You can't miss it when you are in Kansai area. You can enjoy feeding deer wandering here and there; over 1000 deer are counted now.
They are really tamed and friendly.
