Toji Temple was erected in the late 8th century as a guardian temple of the state when the emperor's palace was moved from Nara to Kyoto. This temple is best known for its 55m five-story pagoda, the highest of its kind in Japan and an iconic landmark in central Kyoto.

A popular flea market (Kobo-san) is held on the 21 of every month, attracting a multitude of locals and tourists. It is a 15-minute walk southwest of Kyoto Station.

We visited this as part of a walking tour we did. It was worth it. Loved it. Well I enjoyed all the temples I visited whilst in Japan and this was no exception. Picture perfect and well maintained.
Would love to visit again and be able to spend more time.

This is a very cool and inspiring temple - the Pagoda really seems to loom over the area and gives it a sense of grandeur.
The large grounds are not stupendous, but make for a pleasurable stroll. Furthermore, the various temples and shrine's adjacent to Toji enhance the experience.

Check out the monthly flea market that absolutely takes over the entire temple ground. Lots of locals bring out their wares and is truly a treasure hunt in a world heritage setting!

A beautiful and peaceful temple to visit. Beautiful flowers and pond. Lots of natural seats and benches about to allow for peaceful quiet introspection. Not a lot of tourists running about. There was an artist gallery when we visited. The two main halls have wooden statues of Buddha and other deities. At 5 platforms, the pagoda is the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan.

There is no where better! We love it here. The atmosphere is great and there is plenty to see and do. It’s worth asking how things work as it can seem a little confusing if you are not a local. It’s used by locals and at first wondered what they were all doing. But by asking (everyone was friendly and are used to travelers and being asked stuff in English) I got some good advice and felt like it’d unearthed a real treasure. The sculptures are amazing but you might want to use Google perhaps as a guide as there is not much written.
Toji is a treasure but it makes you work to really get the best out of it. We tried and fell in love with it!

Toji Temple is situated 30 minutes away by train from my house. It has very beautiful five-storied Pagoda. This temple was donated to Kukai by Emperor Saga. I see this temple every time I go to Kyoto.

Cathy again. As I made a big mistake, I visited Toji on May 15th, 2014. However, I was locked out as I reached the temple after 5 in the afternoon, so I took pictures from the overpass near the temple. Five story pagoda is beautiful with young leaves in May. I will go there earlier next time. You too be careful! Reach there before 5 in the afternoon!!

Nara used to be the capital of Japan and has lots of old temples and shrines . Among them, Todaiji temple is the most impressive because it has a huge image of Buddha. You can't miss it when you are in Kansai area. You can enjoy feeding deer wandering here and there; over 1000 deer are counted now.
They are really tamed and friendly.
