Toji Temple was erected in the late 8th century as a guardian temple of the state when the emperor's palace was moved from Nara to Kyoto. This temple is best known for its 55m five-story pagoda, the highest of its kind in Japan and an iconic landmark in central Kyoto.

A popular flea market (Kobo-san) is held on the 21 of every month, attracting a multitude of locals and tourists. It is a 15-minute walk southwest of Kyoto Station.

A stationery away from Kyoto station and about a 15-20 walk from there. The park is lovely even during winter and to see all the large Buddha statues is amazing. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it has the tallest pagoda in Japan.

Peaceful surroundings make for a nice experience. Lots of good photo opportunities but don't expect to spend too long there. Recommend getting the ticket that allows you to visit all the buildings within the site. Kanchi-in Temple that is included as part of this is well worth it.

One of the oldest Buddhist Temples and Pagoda in Kyoto. I should of visited at night because lights shine on all the buildings creating a captivating glow. It was founded in the 796 century and one of only three Buddhist Temples allowed in the city which was the capital at the time. This place feels very old and as soon as you walk into one of the buildings it seems like you used a time machine to travel back to the 8th century. Stop by and take some night shots you won't be disappointed.

A site that needs to be on your destination list simply for the uniqueness of the famous pagoda. Attractive grounds surround Japan’s tallest pagoda and the entrance fee to the complex is only 500¥. You can’t enter the pagoda, but it makes for a great photo backdrop.

At night just when autumn began, they had this light show highlighting the different colours of the leaves. It was mesmerising. The old architecture and the statues were also breathtaking.

Toji Temple is situated 30 minutes away by train from my house. It has very beautiful five-storied Pagoda. This temple was donated to Kukai by Emperor Saga. I see this temple every time I go to Kyoto.

Cathy again. As I made a big mistake, I visited Toji on May 15th, 2014. However, I was locked out as I reached the temple after 5 in the afternoon, so I took pictures from the overpass near the temple. Five story pagoda is beautiful with young leaves in May. I will go there earlier next time. You too be careful! Reach there before 5 in the afternoon!!

Nara used to be the capital of Japan and has lots of old temples and shrines . Among them, Todaiji temple is the most impressive because it has a huge image of Buddha. You can't miss it when you are in Kansai area. You can enjoy feeding deer wandering here and there; over 1000 deer are counted now.
They are really tamed and friendly.
