This temple was founded in 710, the same time the capital of Nara was established. The temple is famous for its 50m-high five-story pagoda, the country's second tallest following that of Toji Temple in Kyoto. In the precincts is recently renovated National Treasure Museum that display the temple's Buddhist art collection. A three-faced, six-armed statue of Ashura is very imposing. This is the nearest sight from Nara stations.

Another beautiful temple in Nara. The history here is just amazing. I was fortunate enough to see the Buddha in the Three Story Pagoda, which is rare because it is only visible one week out of the year.

Nice pagoda along the main Nara road. Probably the first you'll see when walking from train to the main park area. No admission charge to walk around the outside. "No drone" sign up on the fence. Worth a few minutes. Light shines better in the afternoon.

Nice Pagoda and temple nearby. Shrine is close to Nara park and overall it's perfect area for walks picnic and relax to spend time with friends and family. Area is free of charge and there is quite a lot of interesting buildings nearby. For sure it's worth to see it if you are in Nara anyways.

Nice and calm place to visit.
Pictures scenery and less crowd compared with the nearby Todaiji temple.

Also, walking distance from the metro and nara park.

Highly recommended!!

Kofukuji (興福寺, Kōfukuji) used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara, the most powerful family clan during much of the Nara and Heian Periods. The temple was established in Nara at the same time as the capital in 710. At the height of Fujiwara power, the temple consisted of over 150 buildings.

I don't remember how many times I visited this place. I really love this area and I can walk as if I walk in my garden. I will take you to a hidden path, where you would see yourself that you don't know . While walking in the path, chatting is prohibited. You would be alone to face real you.
