Japan's three major Chinatowns are located in Kobe, Yokohama and Nagasaki. Called Nankinmachi, this compact area in central Kobe is home to Chinese restaurants, food stores and souvenir shops. This town has been a touristy spot ever since the Kobe port was opened to foreign trade in 1868. Among major festivals are Lunar New Year in January/February and Mid-Autumn Festival in September/October.
