Aqua World Oarai, one of the largest aquarium in Japan, is located in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture. Other than their famous collection of sharks (more than 50 species) and sunfishes (Manbou/Mambo in Japanese), there are nearly 70,000 creatures / 580 species on its vast site of 19,800 square meters (4.9 acres). Along with large fish tanks with a variety of creature from seas around the world, there is a museum area where you can learn about sea creatures with films, interactive panels and specimens. They also provide plenty of show programs, such as the Live Performances of Dolphins and Sea Lions, the Penguin Parade and the Aqua Viewing (Divers with underwater cameras show you the close expressions of fish).

We had a great time. Interesting and varied enough to keep my young kids' attention and not so big that they were exhausted before seeing everything. The dolphin show is impressive, but it's a long wait, first queuing and then sitting waiting for the show to start (we waited about 45 minutes total).

DON’T VISIT! I find it so hard to see you keep these beautiful creatures in captivity while they should swim free in the ocean. I know this for you is just making money but making money on harmless animals is unacceptable. Don't let you get fooled by the smile of a dolphin. It's because of their jaw structure that it looks like they are smiling but they aren't. Please please please consider what you are doing and turn things around. If the show is over, you get to go home. They don’t.

I heard that it's a small aquarium but it was my first experience and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty big. Lots of specimens. Almost all the info is in Japanese.
