This majestic mausoleum atop a hill is the resting place of Date Masamune, one of the most powerful feudal lords in the Edo period. The ornate architecture and multi-colored interiors reflect the sumptuous Momoyama style. It was destroyed during WWII air raids but reconstructed in 1979.
The building is surrounded by bamboo stalks and is reached through a steep slope lined with massive cedar trees. In the evening, candles are lit and music with traditional drums and flutes is heard.
