This crater lake at 1550m in altitude is located near the top of the active volcano Mount Zao.
The crater was created in an eruption in the 12th century and the lake started to take form around 200 years ago.
The lake is cobalt blue and surrounded by red crumbling rocks.

The place is reached by way of a trail walk from a cable car station or through a road called Zao Echo Line.
Prepare something to cover as the area is cold and windy even in summer.
