Lake Akan is a crater lake that makes up Akan National Park in eastern Hokkaido.
The fifth largest as freshwater lake in the island, this lake is home to marimo, a rare algae species that forms itself into beautiful green balls, and kokanee salmon, a landlocked form of sockeye salmon.

The lake freezes solid all over in winter, offering opportunities to wakasagi (smelt) ice fishing and winter sports like skating and snowmobiling.
The ice festival called "Tokabi" takes place on the lake in February.
The surrounding areas are mostly sub-alpine coniferous forests including Yezo spruce and Sakhalin fir.
