The resort town of Akanko Onsen, on the south shores of Lake Akan, is inhabited by one of the largest remaining Ainu communities in Hokkaido. In the Ainu community area (Ainu-kotan), you can enjoy the indigenous dance and music that uses an instrument called "mukkuri", similar to a jaw-harp.
In the resort, there are hot spring ryokan, a public bath house, and a number of foot and hand baths. The hand baths seen in Hokkaido are said to have originated from this area. The dishes with wakasagi (smelt), kokanee salmon and lake lobsters from Lake Akan are real treats.
