Mount Chokai is a phenomenally beautiful volcanic peak soaring on the border of Akita and Yamagata prefectures. The height of 2,236m is the second highest in the Tohoku Region. The peak is fondly referred to as 'Dewa (Akita) Fuji' due to its resemblance to Mount Fuji.

This is a sacred spot for religious mountain worshippers and is also popular among hikers. In July and August, you can see a variety of wildflowers in bloom including thistles proper to this area. The mountain is a skiing destination in spring and summer.
