This ancient temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, which has 73 branch temples today, was founded by a monk named Mutei Ryosho in 1348 A.D. Until today, a number of monks have been trained austerely in this monastery. As a high temple with a long history, there are many treasures and ancient halls and buildings are preserved here. Three of them, the thached main hall, the auarters of priests and the main gate are designated as the Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
