A cherry tree growing up out of a giant granite boulder in front of the Morioka District Court in Iwate Prefecture.
This 360 year old tree, 10 meters high and a perimeter of 4.3 meters, starts to bloom in late April every year. Enjoyable both in the spring daylight and in the night time.
Designated as a Natural Monument of Japan in 1923.

Nice place for a picture. Nothing more. The tree itself is located in a hospital/university, as far as I remember.

The Rock Splitting Cherry tree is a national treasure. It's one of the first cherry trees to bloom in Morioka. It's absolutely beautiful at this time of year. A must see if you're in Morioka's, any time of year

Nothing much in winter... snap a photo and move on.. perhaps much better during spring. .. easy walk from the castle ruins though..
