The Suigo Sawara Ayame (Iris) Park, formerly known as the Suigo Sawara Aquatic Botanical Garden, was opened in 1969 in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture, inside the Suigo-Tsukuba Quasi-National Park, which covers an area in southeast Ibaraki Prefecture and northeast Chiba Prefecture. In the 8-hectare (20-acre)-iris park, there are ponds and waterways with islands and bridges and you can enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere of the Suigo area. 1.5 million plants / 400 species of iris, which are the most in the East, can be seen in the park along with other aquatic plants including 300 species of lotus which are the largest varieties in Japan. You can also enjoy a boat ride around the park waterways in a small boat called "Sappa-bune", viewing irises and lotuses just at your eye level. There are a few of wisteria trellises on site and the 70-meter (76.5-yard)-wisteria tunnel is also popular. The Ayame Matsuri (Iris Festival) from end May to June and the Hasu Matsuri (Lotus Festival) from July to early August are held annually.

It was a raining and cloudy day when we visited to this park. Crews there are still working hard with enthusiasm to treat all visitors . A Beautiful garden that u can spend 1-2 hours to relax a bit

The place is very nice for a walk especially during summer. It’s just next to Tonegawa so you get some cool breeze from the river. There are different types of lotus for those who love them. Entrance fee is ¥800 during the blood iris festival from the end of may to end of June. ¥600 from May to August excluding the blood iris festival time. ¥200 April and from September to November. You can also ride a small boat through the park and view the lovely flowers beside the waterways. There are some stilts for for children to try walk on them. Enough parking space even for people with disabilities, no parking fee.

Impressive collection of irises (to be watched in June, gets crowded during the matsuri time). Water lilies, hydrangea, wisteria, etc on top, neatly organized paths, ponds, hills, bridges, boat rides. I had quite hard time to find the entrance (walking from Hitachitone river along the canal towards Yodaura Bay) --- signs on that looong fence around the garden would've been helpful.

4stars for effort and hard work of all volunteers to make this small park beautiful. It has cute playground for kids. For my personal taste this park lacks natural trees surrounding it as it is in middle of fields -therefore it feels little artificial.
