Kuonji Temple, located in Minobu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, is the head temple of Nichiren-shu Sect Buddhism. It was founded in 1274 by a priest, Nichiren (1222-1282), as his hermitage on Mt. Minobu, and its Dai-Garan (main temple building) was developed later in 1474 by its 11th head priest, Niccho (1422-1500). Entering the precincts through the huge San-mon Temple Gate and climbing the Bodai-tei Flight with 287 stone steps, you can admire a series of magnificent temple buildings. Though the most of them were reconstructed after the Great Fire of Meiji (1875), they still convey their original prestigious appearances. There is an ancient and gigantic weeping cherry tree in front of Soshido (Founder's Memorial Hall) along with one in front of Butsu-den (Worship Hall), both of them are 400 years old, and are admired by people in the cherry blossom season (late March to early April). There is also a forest of ancient Sugi-cedar trees which are said to be planted by Nichiren himself. On the top of Mt. Minobu there is a place where Nichiren is said to climb to look in the direction of his hometown, Minamiboso in the present Chiba Prefecture, remembering his parents back there, and you can enjoy viewing Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay from there.

When I go to temples in the mountains I'm going there partly to see the cool architecture and partly to experience the natural environment. As a result, I couldn't tell you much about the Buddhist history or whether the explanations or services were of lower high quality, but I can tell you that this is a very scenic location. I visited in late December when snow had fallen a little but in the lower areas everything had melted off, and it was quite scenic. You can hike to the top of the mountain or you can take the ropeway, and you have the same choice to go down. If you have time, I strongly recommend hiking down, because it's just a nice area to enjoy, what with the forests and vast expansive views. On a good day, Mount Fuji is visible from the summit.

Absolutely gorgeous temple.

There is many stories written about Kuonji and they are all right. This temple is magnificent, vast and very beautiful. We were lucky and got a tour from one of the volunteer guide, who took us through the entire complex. I can highly recommend coming to Minobu and visiting Kuonji, you will have unforgettable experience.
