Matsumae Park, located at the southernmost tip of Hokkaido, is a park surrounding a former feudal castle. Around 10,000 cherry trees, of 250 different species, blossom for nearly a month from late April. This park is well known as one of Japan's 100 Best Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots.

Matsumae Cherry Festival from April 29th to May 19th draws a huge crowd. The castle here is Hokkaido's only castle and some relics are Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

Great place to visit, but pretty far from anything. Buses take up to 2 hours from the nearest city, but best to rent a car if you can. Also you can wear vintage samurai armor and kimotos.

Went a few days ago. Managed to see the sakura trees, but not all were in full bloom. However it was a pleasant walk and there were other interesting things to see at the park. Parking was easy as there were signs everywhere. Paid 500 yen for parking.

3:30 hours bus ride from Hakodate makes it tough to reach. But the park with wonderful cherry blossoms still attracts a good turnout. The 3 ancient trees are really worth the trouble.
