Lake Tazawa is Japan's deepest lake at 423m, surrounded with hot springs and skiing resorts. Even in mid-winter, the lake never freezes solid because about one third of its depth goes below the sea level, closer to warm underground.
Legend has it that Tatsuko, a beautiful girl who turned into a dragon, lives happily together with a dragon prince at the bottom, warming the water. There is a golden statue of Tatsuko at the western end of the lake, where you can enjoy boating and swimming in summer.
