This zen temple is home to the most famous rock garden in Japan. Since its foundation in the 15th century, people have been contemplating a collection of 15 rocks adrift in a sea of white pebbles. The designer and the motif is unknown, but some have interpreted the layout as symbolic of the islands of Japan, while others believe it represents a mother tiger swimming with her cubs in twos and threes. The pebbles are artfully raked everyday.

Another attraction is a beautifully arranged garden with a large pond. The moss is bright green under the trees and there are many places to stop for wondrous views. There are cherry trees, azaleas, wisterias, water lilies, and white yuki-yanagi (spirea) in bloom in spring and early summer. The scenery with autumn colors and snow carpet is also marvellous. The temple is close to the bamboo grove of Arashiyama.

A nice zen temple with one of the most famous rock gardens in the world. But as the place is overcrowded there's no zen feeling at all. And the famous rock garden was a little disappointing too. Maybe I'd expected too much. :)

Perfect place to cool off this famous Kyoto Summer. At the other side of the rock garden, you would find a calm and serene mossy garden with natural lights shining through trees. Meditation seems to be in order.

Totally overrated. The only thing I found interesting were the paintings of the tea room. Moreover, most places were closed. We were never asked for the ticket until we reached the temple, it seems one can see the small gardens for free.

This complex is famous for its 15 rocks. Those rocks are quite forgetable. They are not the reason you should go here. The rest of the table isnt much to look at either. The garden is, in contrast to the temple, beautiful.

Quintessential Zen Garden. A must see if you visit Kyoto. Beautiful, serene... words do not describe this properly.

Simply sitting and seeing the garden induced me to the inner world of my mind and helped me to reach a calm state of mind. Try and see what the garden tells you.Visited Wintr 2011,spring2014

Ryoanji Temple is my favorite place and no doubt one of the best and most impotant place in Kyoto, or in Japan. The temple's name is synonymous with the temple's famous 'Zen garden', the karesansui (dry landscape) rock garden, thought to have been built in the late 15th century.

Placed within the garden are fifteen stones of different sizes, carefully composed in five groups; one group of five stones, two groups of three, and two groups of two stones. The stones are surrounded by white gravel, which is carefully raked each day by the monks. The only vegetation in the garden is some moss around the stones.

If you meditate in the garden even few minutes, you will find so misteriou time and space, and surely you will be inspired by something. I am looking forward to seeing you in Ryoanji soon.

If you are thinking visiting Kinkakuji temple, make up your mind to walk a little bit more to Ryoanji temple. A beautiful rock garden is waiting for you there and brings you into space. If you use your imagination you will see lots of things hiding in the garden. This is a must in Kyoto.
