Akihabara has long been a cutting-edge center of electronics, mobile phones, cameras, games and all manner of electric appliances. In recent years, this district has gained recognition as the otaku (geek) heaven or the promised land of Japanese subculture, as more and more shops are catering for anime, manga, idol and cosplay enthusiasts.

Don't be surprised to encounter some people decked out in mind-boggling costumes in the street. There are many cafes with staff dressed like French maids or English butlers to offer peculiar services, which will transport you to a different world. You will see a large hall dedicated only to capsule toys, and then, a mega shopping mall selling electronics. Akibahara is palpably alive with a futuristic atmosphere.
