Wolrd Heritage: Shirakami Sanchi4.4
Shiramami Sanchi is an sprawling mountain range with the Unesco-protected virgin forest of Japanese beech trees. The area straddles the border between Aomori and Akita prefectures, facing the Sea of Japan, and there are good hiking trails through woods to lakes, waterfalls and mountain peaks.
The Juniko ("twelve lakes") is a good spot to enjoy hiking, fishing, boating and camping around a series of small lakes and ponds. Another destination is the Anmon Falls, a set of three waterfalls, the tallest of which is 42m high. At Tsugaru Pass, you can watch the 400-year-old 'mother tree' of the beech forest. Ride on a bus or renta a car in Hirosaki, Aomori.
