Over the hills behind Kasuga Taisha Shrine, there are leisurely hiking trails bordering this primeval forest. Since the 9th century, the forest has been considered sacred with no hunting or lumbering allowed, and most of the area is off-limits to hikers.

One trail (9.2km) that loops around the forest passes the top of Mount Wakakusa (342m), where you can get a wonderful view of Todaiji Temple and other sights in Nara City. This is a less explored spot for tourists and is recommended to enjoy autumn colors.
