This temple is located on the top of Mount Omine (1719m) in the southern mountains of Nara Prefecture. It belongs to the Shugendo sect of Buddhism and has been allowed only for men since its foundation in the 7th century. The place is open from May 3 to September 26, and accessed by a 4-hour climb from Dokawa Onsen. The temple and its surrounding area is a religious sanctuary and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
