Kumano Hayatama Grand Shrine is one of the three important Kumano Grand Shrines and is the head shrine of all Kumano shrines in Japan. It is located in Shingu City of Wakayama Prefecture. The shrine lies along the Kumano-gawa River.
The shrine's main deities are "Kumano Hayatama no Ohkami" and "Kumano Fusumi no Ohkami", who are husband and wife, but twelve other gods are also worshipped.
On the grounds of Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine, there is a grand Asian Bayberry Tree that was planted by Taira no Shigemori and is designated as a natural monument. There is also the Kumano Sacred Treasure Museum, where more than 1000 nationally appointed cultural properties are on display, including Hiougi, handheld fans made of cypress.

One of the three shrines of the Kumano Sanzan Shrine complex (the other two are the Kumano Hongu Taisha and the Kumano Nacho Taisha). The bright orange paint makes the shrine distinct from the Hongu Shrine, yielding a lovely yet serene atmosphere.
Close nearby are several shops build in traditional style that are worth a visit.
For great coffee and cake visit the "Nikki no Mado" café two streets away.

Beautiful temple. Serene and quiet retro town. One of the three main temples in the Pilgrimage path.

Nice and quiet place. Very rare to see tourists there. Very kind locals in the place. It is walking distance away from the train station. Only thing to consider is that the town is quite empty, with some retro shops...
