This onsen town sprawls on the mountainside from the port where silver from the Iwami Ginzan mines was once shipped out to the major cities. The one-street town is lined with several inns and two old pubic bathhouses dating back to 1920s. The area has no night-life strips and is reminiscent of Japan's good old days.

The hot resort is believed to originate from the 8th century and flourished in the 15-19th centuries with active production and shipment of silver. One public bathhouse, Motoyu Onsen, is the oldest here and features a simple, old-fashioned style of soaking. The other one, Yakushinoyu Onsen, was discovered after an earthquake in 1872.
