Muryoko-in Temple (Ruins) was erected in Hiraizumi in the 12th century, modeling on and larger than the famous Byodoin Temple near Kyoto. As with most of other buildings founded in Hiraizumi by the Fujiwara family, the temple was completed destroyed in a 16th-century fire. What remains today are some cornerstones and a pond with an island sitting in the middle, designed as a Buddhist Pure Land garden.
