A beautiful gorge is formed in the first part of the river that drains Lake Towada into the Pacific Ocean. The gorge is marked with a dozen of cascading waterfalls and carved-out rocks, and is one the most popular autumn-color viewing spots in the Tohoku region. A 9km trail along the stream is a leisurely walk to enjoy waters with ever changing colors.

very beautiful! And it's refreshing to walk along the river. It'd be perfect if they make the trail more complete so that people can less frequently walk on the road which many cars drive through.

the whole place was quiet due to winter. a different experience and a beautiful visit. Used Oirase museum as a starting point and set lake towada as a destination which led us thru the gorge. worth coming back during spring or autumn.

This is one of the place you cannot miss if you are here at Tohoku region during the Autumn season. The trail is about 9 kilometers long and waterfalls cascade down into the stream. You can used either your JR pass or get a 2 days pass for ¥5,000. Depart from Aomori station and takes about 2.5 hrs to get to the stream.

On this autumn foliage season the gorge is packed by local and foreign visitors. It wasn’t as expected that I could find a quiet place to sit down and have my packed lunch. Instead the trail is narrow and filled with escorted tour visitors—sometimes when it’s getting too crowded I have to walk on the pavement.

Oirase Stream flows about 14 kilometers from Lake Towada, along the floor of the Oirase gorge. It meanders through over a dozen of cascading waterfalls and trees which turn their colors into a fresh green in summer time and vibrant colors of red, orange, and yellow from mid-October through early November. This makes Oirase Stream one the most popular destinations to see Autumn-color in Japan. There is a 9Km trail along the stream so you can walk around or rent a bicycle to pedal through a lush forest. I really enjoy coming here because I can feel peaceful and calm mind surrounded by the nature.
