A beautiful gorge is formed in the first part of the river that drains Lake Towada into the Pacific Ocean. The gorge is marked with a dozen of cascading waterfalls and carved-out rocks, and is one the most popular autumn-color viewing spots in the Tohoku region. A 9km trail along the stream is a leisurely walk to enjoy waters with ever changing colors.

If you check the JR Bus schedule closely, this is a wonderful day trip from Aomori City. You can take the bus to either side, walk to the opposite side, then take the bus back to the city. The walk itself is fairly flat, and more of an exercise walk than rugged mountain hiking.

Never been better. Good place to hike. You can see many photographers and visitors especially during the maple season. Not too many hotels around this area so don’t get lost, better leave before sunset, it gets dark soon.

Not to be missed. Fantastic views and relaxing walk by Oirase river. Trees sand rocks covered in green moss. The path by the river extends for several kilometers with a few waterfalls and great spots for picture taking!

Walked upstream on the morning of warm spring day. The sun was at our backs which made it easier to see all the falls and rapids. Not a difficult trek, even talking upstream. Was very beautiful. If with kids, watch closely as at times the path does come very near the highway.

Oirase Stream flows about 14 kilometers from Lake Towada, along the floor of the Oirase gorge. It meanders through over a dozen of cascading waterfalls and trees which turn their colors into a fresh green in summer time and vibrant colors of red, orange, and yellow from mid-October through early November. This makes Oirase Stream one the most popular destinations to see Autumn-color in Japan. There is a 9Km trail along the stream so you can walk around or rent a bicycle to pedal through a lush forest. I really enjoy coming here because I can feel peaceful and calm mind surrounded by the nature.
