This floating museum is designed to display the history of ferry service that once linked Aomori and a Hokkaido port for 80 years. The ferry carried not only passengers and vehicles but trains as well. The Hakkoda-maru was in operation from 1966 until 1988 when the world's longest undersea tunnel (54km) connected Japan's two major islands.

The museum displays the ship models, crew uniforms and historic events including a 1954 typhoon that sank five ferries. You will also come to know how the trains were loaded on the ship.
