This castle, completed in early 17th century, is one of few castles in Japan that retain many of its original buildings. Although the interior of the castle keep is relatively small and the wooden steps are very steep, a magnificent view of Lake Biwa from the top is rewarding. There are a guardhouse, a three-story watch tower, and a museum that are worth visiting.
This is a beautiful castle to visit in any season, but spring is the best with more than 1,000 cherry trees laden with blossoms. Visitors will perhaps meet the mascot Hikonyan, a cat sporting a samurai helmet.

This is the only remaining Japanese castle that was not destroyed during a war. It is large and like other castles, it offers a great view of its surroundings. Nearby is a garden and inside there is an elevator to take you upstairs. Then you can walk downstairs to see everyhing of the castle. There is a lot of space onside, but care for your head when walking down or up the stairs as these are taller and smaller for your feet.

Truly a great place. One of the few original remaining castle towers. The grounds are fantastic full of well preserved castle structures. There's a little bit of a uphill walk but it's worth it. The view of Hikone from the top is unbeatable. Then on the backside there's a great little garden. Would recommend if you want to get away from the bustle of Kyoto.

This castle is around 10-15 minutes by walk from the Hikone Station. The view of the surrounding especially during spring is breathtaking. Unlike Osaka Castle, this castle is in its own origin and pretty classic. The Hikone Castle Museum only provided the brief english translation but it's enough to make you understand the history behind it. From the museum, it's quite a hike to get to the Hikone Castle but nothing too hard except some elders may have a hard time to reach it as the pavements are uneven. But the surrounding of the Hikone Castle will be worth the hike.

It was interesting. We need to go up a lot of stairs. My favorite part was the garden. Well kept, big and beautiful.

Nice Japanese castle with great museum - small but interesting. Also a great way to see how those lords used to live in the past. There is an old dwelling in the museum - with nice gardens. The castle mascot cat also very cute with appearance three times each day.
The old theatre costumes very interesting.
