This castle, completed in early 17th century, is one of few castles in Japan that retain many of its original buildings. Although the interior of the castle keep is relatively small and the wooden steps are very steep, a magnificent view of Lake Biwa from the top is rewarding. There are a guardhouse, a three-story watch tower, and a museum that are worth visiting.
This is a beautiful castle to visit in any season, but spring is the best with more than 1,000 cherry trees laden with blossoms. Visitors will perhaps meet the mascot Hikonyan, a cat sporting a samurai helmet.

What a surprising site! I was expecting something plain but the castle actually has a good set up! I visited at the end of September on a Friday and there were hardly any people there.
The museum although small has some pretty amazing pieces and they actually have enough of a collection that they do rotate some pieces so research to see what they have out.
The castle grounds are a decent workout but as many people mention the view is worth it.
I would also recommend visiting the diorama center that is near the front entrance ticket booth and it doesn't cost anything extra. They have some great pieces the archaeologists have uncovered in the surrounding area and you can also buy a decently sturdy guidebook in English for just 200 yen.
This site is no Himeji but as far as the smaller castles go, this is probably one of the best I've been to and I've been to a lot of them.

I was a little annoyed at paying full price for the three sights instead of the two, only to discover the gardens were shut due to the typhoon. It would have fair to make people aware of that prior and/or offer the museum in place of the garden. But so be it. The castle is bare inside and full of crazy steep stairs but the view from the top is magnificent. And the real star of the show is photographing the castles exterior which is immaculate. Finally, the museum that required the extra ticket is actually worth the cost - they have the restored rooms of where the lord would live and entertain, which are nice to see up close. They surround a garden area which you can't enter, but still peaceful to observe from the side.

This is the only remaining Japanese castle that was not destroyed during a war. It is large and like other castles, it offers a great view of its surroundings. Nearby is a garden and inside there is an elevator to take you upstairs. Then you can walk downstairs to see everyhing of the castle. There is a lot of space onside, but care for your head when walking down or up the stairs as these are taller and smaller for your feet.

Truly a great place. One of the few original remaining castle towers. The grounds are fantastic full of well preserved castle structures. There's a little bit of a uphill walk but it's worth it. The view of Hikone from the top is unbeatable. Then on the backside there's a great little garden. Would recommend if you want to get away from the bustle of Kyoto.

Nice castle to visit, not a very big one. Next to it a beautifull Japanese garden. You have to visit both.
