This castle, completed in early 17th century, is one of few castles in Japan that retain many of its original buildings. Although the interior of the castle keep is relatively small and the wooden steps are very steep, a magnificent view of Lake Biwa from the top is rewarding. There are a guardhouse, a three-story watch tower, and a museum that are worth visiting.
This is a beautiful castle to visit in any season, but spring is the best with more than 1,000 cherry trees laden with blossoms. Visitors will perhaps meet the mascot Hikonyan, a cat sporting a samurai helmet.

Another breathtaking Castle in Japan.
Be prepared to walk plenty, but it sure is worth it. Definitely not suitable for wheelchair access. Lots of steps and walking up and down stairs. Wear shoes that are easy to take off for access into the castle.
The stone work is magical.
The views are amongst the best I've ever seen.
There isn't much English written around, but it doesn't matter. Definitely worth putting on the must see list.

A designated national treasure & one of key castles in Japan. It’s a well preserved wooden superstructure, but extremely steep to climb the stairs inside the main castle tower. It’s fairly well maintained, gorgeous & yet peaceful to walk around inside. It’s a good place to have a panoramic city view & watch the sunset.

Amazing!! It does take a bit of climbing, first you climb a little hill (they provide you with a walking stick if needed, we went without one and got up fine). Then when you get into the castle, there are extremely steep stairs(!!!) You literally have to climb. But the view you get on the top is amazing!! You can also visit the Gardens with the ticket, the Gardens are quite big and very beautiful. There are benches to sit and relax on everywhere

Beautiful castle in it's original state. Highly recommend going to the Genkyu garden nearby in the autumn for night illumination. This year the illumination lasts through Dec 8.

Very pretty and historically interesting. But beware all the stairs. Seriously. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to visit or else you'll be in a whole world of pain.

Genkyuen Garden: If you visit Hikone castle, please do not miss going Genkyuen Garden. This gargen is one of the typical traditional landscape gardens. It was designed so that visitors can enjoy the view while walking around the pond.
