This zen temple dating back to the 9th century was reconstructed in the early 17th century by Date Masamune, a powerful samurai lord. The long approach lined with cedar trees is beautiful, and looking back at the gate, you can see a marvellous view of the sea at the other end.

The main hall and the zen kitchen are both national treasures, but they are closed until the current renovation is completed in 2019. However, the museum exhibits some of the temple's treasures such as golden screens and a wooden statue of Date Masamune.
