Against the idyllic backdrop of paddy fields lies the campus of Akita International University (AIU), one of the very few universities in Japan that offer all the courses in English. Founded in 2004 and modeled after American liberal arts colleges, this small public university is attracting students all over Japan and from abroad. There are many magnificently looking wooden buildings including a library that is open 24 hours throughout the year. It is 10 minutes by car from Akita Airport.
