Yamagata Prefecture accounts for 70-80% of cherry production in the country, and holds plenty of orchards offering cherry picking experience. The triangle area linking three cities - Tone, Tendo and Sagae - is filled with thousands of orchards where you see what locals call "red jewels" everywhere in June.
The information center in Sagae City, called Cherry Land, provides schedules of cherry harvesting and cherry-related products, and also holds a cherry festival from early June to mid-July. The adjacent park cultivates 115 different varieties from 12 countries. Yamagata's cherry harvest dates back to 1878 when a first seedling was introduced to this well-drained, fertile land with a good climate.
