The southern mountainous area of Yonezawa City is studded with 8 different onsen with long history. Located close to Mount Azuma are Shirabu and Onogawa, both major hot spring resorts, and the other 6 onsen each of which is an independent single inn with distinctive landscape.

Shirabu Onsen with a history of 700 years has many magnificent ryokan with pointed, thatched roofs. The nearby 50m-high waterfall is a good place to make a leisurely stroll. Onogawa Onsen is an old resort found 1,200 years ago and reputed as a sanctuary of fireflies. The remaining onsen have great outdoor pools with different locations - near the cliff, by the gorge, and on a platform with a distant mountain view. Some pools are mixed.
