Sado Island, Japan's 6th largest island off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, is a perfect destination to discover the unspoiled beauty of the country. The island has two mountain ranges, north and south, and the area in between is a plain covered with rice fields and is more populated. The biggest attraction is the Earth Celebration festival in August, hosted by the island's taiko group that is worldly well-known.

Other attractions include a former gold mine that thrived in the Edo period, the spinning in tarai-bune (tiny little boats shaped like barrels), and views from a north peak. Don't forget to taste the region's specialties such as shrimp, oyster and sake. The island is also home to the endangered Japanese Ibis.
