This onsen resort 20km east of Niigata city is famed for its waters most sulphuric in Japan. The emerald-colored waters are said to make your skin lustrous and are very popular with female visitors. Some ryokan have outdoor baths that offer a sweeping view of surrounding rice fields or expansive gardens attached. It is advised to remove all metal accessories (other than those made of gold or platinum) before soaking in the bath.
Another fun attraction is sake sampling. Buy a sake cup with five tickets, and poke around in many sake shops and inns to sample 5 sake out of 96 varieties available. You will have a friendly conversation with other visitors in a slightly tipsy mood.
