Along the middle stream of the Shokawa river, in Toyama Prefecture, reside two villages scattered with gassho-zukuri buildings. These are the farmhouses with sharp-angled thatched roofs built without nails. This architecture style, gassho-zukuri ('hand-clasped structure'), is so called because the shape of the roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks in prayer.

There are around 20 such houses in Ainokura village and about 10 in Suganuma village. This area, together with the nearby Shirakawa-go, was listed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. To get here, drive north on Route 156 from Shirakawa-go, or take a bus from JR Johana Station.
