Cat Island (Aoshima)4.4
For cat loves, there is an small island in Japan where cats are roaming everywhere. This feline paradise, called Aoshima, is located off the coast of Matsuyama city, and inhabited by 15 people and hundreds of cats.
The island can be accessed by ferry and you will be welcome by a huge number of cats at port. They are not afraid of strangers and come close to you and rub their faces against your feet. There are no restaurants or vending machines here, and you should follow one rule: no feeding.

Date of visit: 17th August 2019
You can get to the island (population: 6) from Nagahama port. The boat to the island runs twice a day: 08:00 and 14:30. It takes 30-35 minutes to reach the island. The return boats are at 08:45 and 16:15.
This slightly inconvenient schedule is why I’m rating this island down however the boat schedule appears to be more for the islanders’ benefit than the tourists’.
There are no shops or restaurants on the island so bring food and beverages, and cat food beforehand.
There is a public toilet in the waiting room by the dock.
The locals would prefer visitors not to feed cats on the dock - there is a designated place to feed them, next to the shrine.
There is a “cafe” on the island but it is more suitably called a rest house where a kind lady has opened up her home to visitors. It’s ¥500/person and comes with a drink. You can take a nap and have shelter in air conditioning. However, it doesn’t offer food or a toilet.

Best place on earth !! Also bring as much food as you can - so you can leave some/donate for the times the tourists aren't there to feed them. (Even though the locals feed them anyway). Really lovely cats !!!
