Shimonoseki, located on the strait between Honshu and Kyushu islands, where about 700 ships pass every day, is home to a large fish market. All kinds of seafood can be purchased and eaten here, but most famous specialities are fugu blowfish and whale meat (kujira), as Shimonoseki is the capital of fugu and whale fleets.

On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the first floor of the market will turn into seafood stalls, and you can relish sashimi (raw fish) and other delicacies packed in bento for late breakfast or lunch. The market has been here since 1933, but the new building was erected in 2001 and has a ceiling of artistic design and roof covered with grass.

What an awesome place! Freshest cheapest sushi ever with a huge variety with all the vendors. Cheap and easy parking. Recommend going earlier to beat the ques and crowds. Highly recommend.

Lively and authentic tourist fish market featuring top quality fresh sushi and blowfish. It's a fun experience, but the locals think it’s expensive for what it is. Your selected sushi will be given to you in a disposable clamshell plastic serving tray, so think about where to eat it! Due to coronavirus, the regular seating areas have been closed, and replaced with a bunch of folding tables on the 2F terrace(standing room only). How this represents a safety improvement is beyond me, or anyone else with a questioning mind! During summer, bring a parasol and eat by the sea or eat in the a/c comfort of your car.

I wish I could go again! Incredible variety of fish at reasonable prices. Quite busy but all stalls work really fast. The fish tastes so fresh and yummy. Also a great opportunity to try the famous blowfish fugu. Very nice experience. Totally worth it!

This is a nice, small fish market that is mainly a tourist attraction. We got some fairly good fresh sushi there, but it got really crowded when a tour flooded in full of Chinese tourists off a cruise ship. If I knew how to predict when that might happen, I would definitely time my visit to avoid that!
