Hanami-Kouji is a street extending from San-jo street to a temple called Kenninji Temple. This area, which used be owned by the temple, was donated to Kyoto Prefecture and given to the union of ochaya in Giou Kobu. The union developed the area into a pleasure quater called Hanamachi ( literally , flower town.) In the evening after sunset, you happen to encounter Maiko if you are lucky enough.
