A must-visit place which is not so far in distance from Nagahama is the Douganji Kannondo in Takatsuki-cho which is also called as the hometown of Kannon (Goddess of Mercy). The temple, built in the Tempyo period (7-8th century), has the eleven-headed kannon statue designated as a national treasure. The statue placed in this temple is believed to be the most attractive kannon among the seven national treasure kannon statues in Japan. It is a masterpiece of Japanese Buddha statue. Take the opportunity to have a look at its merciful image. (Touching and picture taking of the statue are prohibited.)
