For many centuries, Matsushima Bay has been celebrated as one of Japan's Three Great Sights (the other two being Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture and Ama-no-Hashidate in Kyoto Prefecture). There are about 260 rock islands dotted with pine trees. The famed haiku poet Basho paid a visit in 1689 and composed a poem to highly praise the sweeping bay.
The highlights include a finest zen temple (Zuiganji Temple), a large tea house offering powered green tea (Kanran-tei), and bay cruises that loop around major islands.
