Shitennoji Temple, built in the 6th century, is one of the country's oldest temples. Only the huge gate (torii) is original, dating back to the 13th century. A five-story pagoda here allows you to climb up, and a pond with an amazing number of turtles is a must-see. A flea market is held on the 21st and 22nd of each month, and the Doya-Doya Naked Festival on January 14th is very popular. It is 5-minute on foot from Tennoji Station.

A very quiet Buddhist temple surrounded by busy traffic and high office buildings. Accessible by subway, very well-maintained. A must place for photo enthusiasts and Buddhists.

We loved his place! A Buddhist temple with a five-storied pagoda and several smaller temple buildings. You can climb up the stars inside the pagoda - you don’t really get big views of the city, but it it impressive on its own. There are plenty prayers on small golden plates inside, thousands of them. There’s also a Buddha relic at the very top. Inside one of the palaces are great wall paintings with a history of one of the Buddhas.

A beautiful historical site from Osaka city. Definitely a must go for tourists and locals. Paying an additional fee you can join a buddhist ceremony once in a while. Also very nice just to walk around and take photos.

What a great way to start off the New Year! (Not many shops open.....)
It's a Japanese tradition to visit a Shrine or a Temple on New Year's day?
This is a Buddhist temple. I believe it is the first Buddhist temple in Japan. I am no historian so you can google all about it but it's 1400 years old... That's old.
Captain Google.... wasn't 100% correct about direction. How come we entered thru the side door??? We missed the market!
I guess it's good. We missed the traffic as well ;).
I love Japan. Everyone is so disciplined. Just follow the crowd, you will become expert and will not get lost.
It's a real temple with real monks doing their prayers. Closes at 4pm sharp. Go early.
Happy New Year.

Really beautiful temple. When I went there was a huge local handicraft and second hand market, which was a lot of fun. The temple grounds are gorgeous as well
