Shitennoji Temple, built in the 6th century, is one of the country's oldest temples. Only the huge gate (torii) is original, dating back to the 13th century. A five-story pagoda here allows you to climb up, and a pond with an amazing number of turtles is a must-see. A flea market is held on the 21st and 22nd of each month, and the Doya-Doya Naked Festival on January 14th is very popular. It is 5-minute on foot from Tennoji Station.

Very extensive grounds are a welcome open space in the city. The layout and architecture are Chinese: the site dates from a time before Buddhism was naturalized in Japan. It is still very much a working temple catering to devotees and to people concerned to console the spirits of the departed.

Nice place to visit. Said to be the oldest shrine in Japan at over 1,000 years old. It's a quick 20 minute stop on anyone's trip to Osaka.
