The Torrori sand dunes, about 5km from the city, stretch over 15km east-west along the coast. These are among the largest sand swathes in Japan, with the exotic views attracting tourists. The dunes were formed over thousands of years with the sand washed out from the nearby Sendai River. There are gradually changing billows of sand hills and basins, and the elevation difference is as much as 90m.

Main attractions include the observation deck at the visitor center, which is connected with a chair lift, and camel and horse rides. If you are interested in more adventure, try hang-gliding and paragliding to soar into the sky, or sandboarding to slide the slopes. There is also a museum around here dedicated to sand art and sculpture.
